Montreal honors Daniel Schmid and presents new Swiss films

As the first festival among large international film events, the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal, taking place for the 35th time from October 18 – 28, 2006, will screen a series of films in the honor of Swiss director Daniel Schmid, who passed away last August. Contemporary Swiss filmmaking will be prominently represented in the international competition with the feature film “Comme des voleurs (à l’Est)” by Lionel Baier, and with the documentary film “Angry Monk” by Luc Schaedler. In the international competition for short films, “Le Génie de la boîte de raviolis” by Claude Barras, and “Dr. Strangehill” by Marcel Baechtinger will be shown.
As the second–largest film festival after the Festival des Films du Monde, and taking place in the capital of Quebec, the Nouveau Cinéma festival focuses on the discovery of new trends in filmmaking and on recent developments in the area of New Media: 189 films from 39 countries will be presented. After the festival screened his 2004 feature film debut “Stupid Boy”, Lionel Baier is returning to Montreal with his most recent film “Comme des voleurs (à l’Est)”. In this road movie, the filmmaker follows his family roots to far–away Poland.
The homage to Daniel Schmid features three films encompassing various creative periods of the deceased Swiss director, including “La Paloma” (1974), “Il Baccio di Tosca” (1984), “Beresina or The Last Days of Switzerland” (1999).
