“Abrir puertas y ventanas,” the fiction film debut by the Swiss-Argentine director Milagros Mumenthaler, and “Hiver nomade,” the documentary film debut by Manuel von Stürler from French-speaking Switzerland, are in the running for awards at the 55th San Francisco International Film Festival (April 19-May 3, 2012). The festival on the West Coast ranks as one of the most important platforms for art-house films in the USA. Swiss film producer David Epinay will present “Abrir puertas y ventanas,” while Rolando Colla will present his film “Summer Games” personally to the audience in San Francisco. His film, which won three “Quartz” awards, will be screened out of competition.

Apart from “Abrir puertas y ventanas,” the fiction film “L'hiver dernier” by Belgian director John Shank (coproduction: PCT Cinéma & Télévision, Valais) will also be screened in the New Directors competition. In addition, the film “Los pasos dobles” by Catalan director Isaki Lacuesta (coproduction: Bord Cadre Film, Geneva) will be presented in the World Cinema section. The film was honoured with the Grand Prize in San Sebastian last year.

Numerous Swiss film productions have been screened at the San Francisco International Film Festival in recent years, with two winning major awards. Gael Metroz’s documentary film “Nomad’s Land” was honoured with the Golden Gate Award in 2009, and Jeanne Waltz with the FIPRESCI Award for her fiction film “Pas douce” in 2007.
