The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam IDFA has selected thirteen Swiss documentaries for its 32nd edition. The Swiss coproduction IN A WHISPER was selected for the main competition, Competition for Feature-Length Documentary. The Student Competition will feature the short films SILENT STORM and SWEET SALTY WIND. A total of ten Swiss productions will be screened in the programme sections Best of Fests, Frontlight, Masters, Luminous and Paradocs. The world’s leading documentary film festival takes place this year from November 20 to December 1st.

IN A WHISPER by Heidi Hassan, Patricia Pérez Fernandez (e.g. Matruiska Producciones, PCT Cinéma Télévision SA, Martigny-Croix / Light Night Production SA, Geneva) was selected for the IDFA Competition for Feature Documentary and celebrates its world premiere in Amsterdam. The autobiographical film – a coproduction between Spain, Cuba, France and Switzerland – is based on the correspondence between the two Cuban filmmakers and takes the viewer on a remarkable journey of emigration. The documentary EUROPA “BASED ON A TRUE STORY” by Kivu Ruhorahoza (UK, Rwanda, Switzerland), coproduced by the Swiss production company Cocoon Procuctions, will also be showing in the Competition for the Long Documentary Film. With the short films SWEET AND SALTY WIND by Laura Gabay and SILENT STORM by Anaïs Moog, two young talents are represented in the IDFA Competition for Student Documentary.

Extraordinary stories far removed from the mainstream

The Frontlight section presents only premieres that tell stories that are far removed from the mainstream and that go deeper: RADIO SILENCE by Juliana Fanjul paints a striking portrait of Mexican journalist Carmen Aristegui, who refuses to be intimidated or silenced by the government even after her dismissal from television. With THE FORUM by Marcus Vetter (coproduction Dschoint Ventschr), the German director was the first independent filmmaker to succeed in getting a glimpse behind closed doors at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Edgar Hagen’s WHO ARE WE?, which celebrates its world premiere in the Luminous section, examines how we deal with situations in which everything turns out differently than we imagined.

Four Swiss productions among the Best of Fest

The Best of Fest section will present Jacqueline Zünd’s award-winning film WHERE WE BELONG (world premiere: Berlinale), along with Lasse Linder’s short film ALL CATS ARE GREY IN THE DARK, which celebrated its premiere at this year’s Locarno Film Festival and won an award at the TIFF Festival in Canada; also screening are Mischa Hedinger’s AFRICAN MIRROR (world premiere: Berlinale) and the documentary ADVOCATE, coproduced by Close Up Films and widely acclaimed worldwide. Other sections will be showing the coproductions SING ME A SONG by Thomas Balmès (Masters) and the short film SAN VITTORE by the artist Yuri Ancarani (Paradocs), coproduced by Kunsthalle Basel.
