A market in the town of Vevey on Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). It has existed for over 500 years in the exact same spot. In the old days people came from the surrounding countryside with wagons, carts and horses loaded down with wood, hay, chestnuts, butter, cheese. Earlier periods are recreated with the help of engravings and photographs showing the many changes in means of transport and life styles that have occurred over the years. For a good 12 months the camera spied on some of the more interesting characters of the market, both at work and at play: a fisherwoman (her family trade passed down through the generations for 5000 years); a 70-year-old mushroom collector, an organic market gardener and his son Sébastien, a woman from Cameroon and the Vevey region’s oldest farmer with her bachelor son. As the seasons change a woman who sells poultry and a florist also make their appearance at the market. They are all people who make a scant living, and who with each passing year are being replaced at the market by retailers. The film pays tribute to people who have inherited a trade and a way of life that in most cases are on the verge of extinction.
