“Cinéma du réel”, Paris: Jacqueline Veuve’s film in competition
03.03.2003
With her film “Jour de marché” (Market Day), longtime Swiss documentary filmmaker Jacqueline Veuve is participating at the 25th edition of the “Cinéma du réel” festival in Paris, France (March 7-16, 2003). Also selected among the approximately 30 films at this international competition is the German-Swiss co-production “Die II. Phase” (The II. Phase) by Lukas Schmid.
In “Jour de marché”, Jacqueline Veuve portrays the labor-intensive daily life of flower and vegetable growers, fishermen, etc… who display their products for sale at the local market in Vevey, Switzerland. In a time of proliferation of supermarkets, these men and women subsist on small incomes, and the survival of their way of life is uncertain. In his film, Lukas Schmid follows a drug-addicted youth offender who is expected to find his way “back to the norm” in a closed prison that formerly served as a monastery.
For the 25th year, the festival “Cinéma du réel” takes place at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France. Under the direction of Suzette Glenadel, it occupies an important place among European documentary film festivals and devotes special attention to ethnographic film. Both Jacqueline Veuve and Lukas Schmid will be present for audience discussions after the screenings of their respective films.
