QUEENS and WE, THE INHERITORS win this year’s main awards

The Swiss Film Awards 2025 were presented in Geneva tonight. The Swiss Film Academy honoured QUEENS by Klaudia Reynicke as Best Feature Film and WE, THE INHERITORS by Simon Baumann as Best Documentary Film. SOUTHERN BRIDES by Elena López Riera was awarded Best Short Film.

Klaudia Reynicke’s QUEENS (REINAS; Alva Film, Britta Rindelaub, Thomas Reichlin) won the Swiss Film Award for Best Feature Film 2025. The Swiss-Peruvian-Spanish coproduction has already enjoyed an illustrious festival career: after celebrating its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2024, QUEENS won the Grand Prix for Best Film in the Generation Kplus Competition at the Berlinale and the Audience Award on the Piazza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival. The family drama was also the official Swiss entry in the Oscar race and has been sold in over ten territories.

The Swiss Film Award for Best Documentary Film went to Simon Baumann’s WE, THE INHERITORS (WIR ERBEN; Balzli & Fahrer, Dieter Fahrer). The film celebrated its world premiere in the Semaine de la Critique in Locarno, where was honoured with the Grand Prix. WE, THE INHERITORS has been running successfully in Swiss cinemas since the end of January.

Internationally successful short films

Elena López Riera’s SOUTHERN BRIDES (LAS NOVIAS DEL SUR; Alina film, Eugenia Mumenthaler, David Epiney) received the Swiss Film Award for Best Short Film. At the end February, the director was already honoured with the French César for Best Documentary Short Film. The coproduction between Spain, Switzerland and France celebrated its world premiere in the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes in 2024 and won the Queer Palm.

The Swiss Film Award for Best Animated Film went to Samuel Patthey’s VOICELESS (SANS VOIX; DOK MOBILE, Mark Olexa). The film had already won the Pardino d’Oro for Best Swiss Short Film at the Locarno Film Festival as well as the Best Swiss Award at the Fantoche Festival in Baden.

Mégane Brügger’s MOM DANCES (MAMAN DANSE; École cantonale d'art de Lausanne) was honoured as the Best Graduation Film. The director won an award for her short documentary film at the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur and is currently working on her first feature-length film.

Four award-winning actors

This year’s Swiss Film Award for Best Actor was presented ex aequo to David Constantin for the leading role in TSCHUGGER – THE LAST FALL (TSCHUGGER – DER LÄTSCHT FALL) and to Dimitri Krebs for his leading role in THE TRAITOR (LANDESVERRÄTER).

The French-Swiss actress Laetitia Dosch was honoured as Best Actress for her role in her own directorial debut DOG ON TRIAL (LE PROCÈS DU CHIEN). The film celebrated its premiere in Cannes last year. Rachel Braunschweig received the Swiss Film Award for Best Supporting Role for her performance in FRIEDA’S CASE (FRIEDAS FALL).

The feature film THE SPARROW IN THE CHIMNEY (DER SPATZ IM KAMIN) garnered two awards: director Ramon Zürcher won the Swiss Film Award for Best Screenplay and, together with Peter von Siebenthal and Balthasar Jucker, for Best Sound.

Marcel Vaid was honoured with the Best Film Score in PARADISES OF DIANE (LES PARADIS DE DIANE). This is the fifth time a Swiss Film Award has been presented to the composer and musician. Cinematographer Gabriel Sandru received the Swiss Film Award for Best Cinematography in ELECTRIC CHILD and editor Kevin Schlosser for Best Film Editing in the documentary film RIVERBOOM. The Special Academy Award went to Oliver Keller for his work as the stunt coordinator for the film TSCHUGGER – THE LAST FALL.

The Swiss-French couple and artistic duo Barbet Schroeder and Bulle Ogier were honoured with the Swiss Film Honorary Award for their lifetime achievements. The Swiss director and the French actress rank among the most influential figures of the Nouvelle Vague.
