21.02.2008

The documentary film “Retour à Gorée” by Swiss film director Pierre-Yves Borgeaud (production: CAB Production, Lausanne, and DreamPixies, Vevey) was awarded the Jury Prize of the “Best Documentary Film” in the Best Documentary Competition at the 16th Pan African Film & Arts Festival in Los Angeles, which took place from February 7 to 18, 2008.
The film is a musical road movie which accompanies world-famous Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour’s on his epic journey, tracing the trail left by slaves – and the jazz music they invented – from Dakar to New Orleans, New York and Luxemburg. The film was among the 59 documentary films presented at the festival and one of the eight films to participate in the Best Documentary Competition. The jury, comprised of 23 film professionals, selected “Retour à Gorée” as the winner of the competition.

The Pan African Film & Arts Festival was initiated in Los Angeles in 1992. With an overall festival audience of approximately 200,000 every year, it attracts 40,000 visitors to its film screenings. Famous Afro-American celebrities who attend the festival include Wesley Snipes, Jamie Foxx, Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder.

“Retour à Gorée” will be screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in conjunction with the Best of the African Diaspora Film Festival at the end of February. At the same time, screenings will also begin in Austria and the Czech Republic. At the beginning of April, the film will be released in France (distributor: Hevadis Films) and in the U.S. (distributor: ArtMattan).
