Osaka City Special Prize for Christian Frei
15.11.2002
Swiss film director Christian Frei received the Osaka City Special Prize on Friday, November 22. His documentary film “War Photographer” was screened at the 9th Osaka European Film Festival (November 15 – 25, 2002).
The jury explained its decision by stating that “Christian Frei is one of the major documentary filmmakers, whose works have achieved worldwide acclaim. This film “War Photographer” is remarkable not only for its artistic and technical achievement but also for its message for peace. This intense purpose of the photographs taken by protagonist James Nachtwey is paralleled by the intention of the director Christian Frei. Images from the battle fields of the world, from the poorest corners of the earth pass through the cameraman's eye to reach into our very souls. For me, says James Nachtway, the strength of photography lies in its ability to evoke a sense of humanity; and for documentary film makes Christian Frei, the power to bring about a charge in us.”
An additional recipient of the Osaka City Special Prize was French director, actor, and producer Jacques Perrin (“Microcosm”, “Winged Migration”). In previous years, renowned European directors such as Wim Wenders, Louis Malle, and Nanni Moretti were given the award. With honoring Christian Frei, this is the first time a documentary film director has received this prize.
