The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its intention to award an honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar to filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard at the second Governors Awards ceremony on November 13.

In a statement, the Academy paid homage to the New Wave figurehead who started out as a critic at "Les Cahiers du Cinéma" before becoming a director and making his feature "Breathless", whose bold shooting and editing style had a profound impact on viewers and filmmakers. Director-producer Francis Ford Coppola ("Apocalypse Now), film historian Kevin Brownlow and actor Eli Wallach ("The Good, the Bad and the Ugly") will also be honoured. It remains to be seen whether Godard who, "for 50 years has written and directed provocative and sometimes controversial films", will go to Hollywood to receive his statuette.
