Joschka Fischer turned 60 a few years ago. So did the Federal Republic of Germany. The two had a tumultuous past. They both had to confront the guilt of a lost war and the incomprehensibility of the Holocaust, while starting from ruins, witnessing an economic miracle, weathering political turbulence and nevertheless becoming key factors among the international states. Joschka Fischer as the foreign minister, and Germany as an important and stabilising member of the European Union.
