Zurich Film Festival 2011: Golden Eye for “Darwin”

Thirty-five-year-old Zurich-born director Nick Brandestini was honoured with an award for Best German Language Documentary Film for his documentary film “Darwin,” which he shot in the U.S.A., at the 7th Zurich Film Festival on October 2, 2011.

Thirty-five-year-old Zurich-born director Nick Brandestini was honoured with an award for Best German Language Documentary Film for his documentary film “Darwin,” which he shot in the U.S.A., at the 7th Zurich Film Festival on October 2, 2011. The Golden Eye is endowed with CHF 20,000 for the director and CHF 60,000 for the promotion of the film. The Audience Award also went to a Swiss documentary film: the debut film “Unter Wasser Atmen – das zweite Leben des Dr. Nils Jent” by Andri Hinnen and Stefan Muggli. The Audience Award is awarded to a film voted as the favourite among the competition entries.

In his film "Darwin" Nick Brandestini portrays a small settlement located in the middle of the California's desert. Jury member Güzin Kar praised the film as a "genial story that tells of the American way of life" and "life's major issues in life by means of incredibly strong images." "Darwin" has already gained a great deal of attention and garnered awards at other festivals, including such international film festivals as Auckland, Karlovy Vary, Santa Barbara and Tel Aviv. The film's next prominent appearance will be at the 55th BFI London Film Festival (October 12-27).
