Young Swiss filmmakers take Portugal by storm
19.06.2009
Films by six young Swiss film directors, all of whom are under the age of 30, will be screened at the 5th International Youth Film Festival, held in the coastal city of Espinho just south of Porto (June 21-28, 2009). They will all participate in one of the festival’s six competitions devoted to young filmmakers.
Four of the films are short animation films made at the Lucerne School of Art and Design (HSLU): “Signalis” by Floyk (Adrian Flückiger); “Chrigi” by Anja Kofmel; “Die Kinder im Mond” by Ursula Ulmi; and “Me and My Monster” by Claudia Röthlin. All of the films are in the running for an award as Best Animation Film. Gabriela Betschart’s 13-minute film “BIPOLAR – an interview with Richard”, also from the Lucerne School of Art and Design, is in the running as Best Documentary Film. In addition, Tobias Nölle’s 30-minute fiction film “René”, which was honoured with the Golden Leopard in Locarno in 2007 as well as numerous other awards, is in the running for an award as Best Fiction Film.
More than 140 works by young filmmakers from all over the world will be presented at the festival in Espinho. After Swiss animation films were honoured with a major appearance at the Monstra Lisboa Animated Film Festival and a strong presence at IndieLisboa, two festivals held in Lisbon in March of this year, young Swiss filmmakers will demonstrate their force for the third time in Portugal.
