Véronique Göel lives and works in Geneva and frequently spends time in Africa, Berlin, New York, Barcelona and Florence. Discovering films by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet in the Cinémathèque in Lausanne in 1974 had a tremendous impact on her artistic career. From 1983 to 1989 she lived and worked together with the American experimental filmmaker Stephen Dwoskin, who produced two of her films. He describes Véronique Goël’s filmmaking as: “Pieces of memory subsumed in a solid cinematic language. By having humans confront activities, humans confront space and, above all, having humans confront humans (these humans whose existence appears to be questioned by others), Véronique tackles many questions that captivate us. The films zero in on touching moments (those that are readily forgotten or all but ignored).”
This year three cinemas in Germany, all of which are important platforms for experimental film, will screen a retrospective of films by Véronique Goël: the regenbogenKINO in Berlin from March 1-19; the Kino Im Sprengel in Hannover from the beginning of March to the beginning of April; and the Werkstattkino in Munich in conjunction with the “dokument und experiment UNDERDOX” festival in September. Véronique Goël will attend screenings in all three cities thanks to support from SWISS FILMS.
