Two Swiss documentary films nominated for the European Film Awards

“The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy” by Swiss filmmaker Peter Liechti, as well as the German coproduction “Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten” by Vadim Jendreyko (production: Mira Film, Basel), are among the 10 documentary films nominated for the prestigious EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY DOCUMENTARY FILM 2009 - PRIX ARTE. The jury, comprised of three members from the film industry, convened in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius this past weekend. The winner of the award will be presented at the 22nd European Film Awards in Bochum, Germany on Saturday, December 12, 2009.
The European Film Academy (EFA) announced the nominations of 10 documentary films in the running for the coveted documentary film award – Prix Arte on October 8. The jury members included the French-Georgian documentary filmmaker Nino Kirtadzé, the Austrian producer Franz Grabner and the Russian documentary filmmaker Viktor Kossakovsky.



The nomination is a highlight in each of the careers of these two Swiss film productions. Following ist world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, “The Sound of Insects” was screened at Festival Visions du Réel in Nyon and at the Hot Docs International Festival in Toronto. In addition, it was honoured with the Millennium Award at the Planete Doc Review Festival in Warsaw. It was screened at festivals in La Rochelle and Karlovy Vary and will be presented in Vancouver as well. The film “Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten” was honoured with three awards last April at Festival Visions du Réel in Nyon and was screened this past summer at the Locarno International Film Festival.



Igaal Niddam’s feature film “Brothers” (production: Troubadour Films, Geneva) is among the 48 films in the running for a nomination for a European Film Award. The nominees will be announced to the public in conjunction with the festival in Seville on November 7, 2009.
