Two Swiss films have been selected for the Busan International Film Festival (October 3-12, 2019), one of the most important film festivals in Asia. Filmmakers Basil Da Cunha and Blaise Harrison will attend the festival in South Korea to present their films in person.

Basil Da Cunha’s O FIM DO MUNDO (Thera Production) will celebrate its international premiere in the Flash Forward section, which is dedicated to new, innovative narrative feature films by non-Asian filmmakers. Like his previous films, the second feature-length fiction film by the Swiss-Portuguese director is set in the Reboleira slum on the outskirts of Lisbon. The film celebrated its premiere in the International Competition of the Locarno Film Festival in August; world sales have been acquired by WIDE in Paris.

The Swiss-French director Blaise Harrison presents his fiction film debut LES PARTICULES in the World Cinema section. The film is a coproduction between Bande à part Films in Lausanne and Les Films du Poisson in France and had its world premiere this year in the Directors’ Fortnight section in Cannes.

Europe! goes Busan: focus on European talents

With its “Europe! goes Busan” initiative, European Film Promotion (EFP), of which SWISS FILMS is also a member, offers European films and talents a platform at the festival. This year a record number of 64 filmmakers and actors will travel to Busan with 33 films as part of this networking programme, during which they can establish contact with the Asian film industry, press and festival audience. Thanks to support from SWISS FILMS, director Basil Da Cunha will participate with his film O FIM DO MUNDO, while Blaise Harrison is among the French delegation with PARTICLES.

SWISS FILMS is increasing its promotional activities in Asia with a diverse number of Swiss film programmes as part of its Asia Focus 2019-2021, including Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
