Tribute to Alain Tanner’s work in Anthology Film Archives in New York

Following the film libraries in Paris and Lausanne in spring 2009, another prestigious institution will showcase the works by the eighty-year-old master of Swiss filmmaking: Anthology Film Archives in New York will present a retrospective of Alain Tanner’s films in collaboration with SWISS FILMS between April 15-22, 2010. The retrospective is comprised of nine films – including the emblematic “Charles, Dead or Alive?” (1969), “Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000” (1976), and “In the White City” (1983) – honouring the unique voice in the “New Swiss Cinema”, namely that of Alain Tanner, who will be awarded the Leopard of Honour for his life’s work this summer in Locarno.
Highlighted among the films produced from 1969 to 1998 is also “The Salamander” (1971), which marks the breakthrough of the cineaste’s international career, as well as the documentary film “Les hommes du port” (1995). All films will be projected in the original versions with English subtitles in 35mm in New York. Rounding off the entire programme will be the portrait film “Alain Tanner, pas comme si, comme ça” by director Pierre Maillard. For health reasons, Alain Tanner will be unable to present his films personally in New York.
