“The Tube”: From festival “Cinéma du réel” to French and Swiss movie theatres

Peter Entell’s film “The Tube” premiered at the festival ”Cinéma du réel” in Paris, France, precisely a year ago. Starting March 16, 2003, it will be shown in Zurich’s movie theatre Riff Raff, and in France it will screen at the “Espace Saint-Michel” movie house in Paris’ Latin Quarter beginning April 2, 2003. Director Peter Entell, who has lived in the French speaking part of Switzerland for many years and is know for his film “Rolling” (1997), is self-distributing his latest production with the support of the Swiss Film Center.
“The Tube” is a journey into the inner workings and realm of the television picture tube and therefore a look behind the daily surface images of this ever-present medium. The film raises questions and poses hypotheses that are of interest for an audience beyond the specialists in brain perception. It attempts to illustrate intricate mechanisms such as the influence of television on the viewer’s (sub)conscious provoking insight and discussion. Entell’s project is of a demanding nature forcing the audience to question their own (television) viewing habits. In order to reach the public with his production, the director has taken unconventional means to distribute his film.
Last October, it was shown at the “Espace Saint-Michel” movie theatre in Paris, organized by a group of individuals who discovered the director and his film at the festival ”Cinéma du réel”. It caught the attention of viewers’ associations and movements such as ATTAC, and consequently, the French company K-Films bought the rights for its distribution. As of now, the film will be shown at the Centre culturel suisse in Paris (March 9), and on the French-German television station ARTE (March 31) before its theatrical release in Paris, France.
In Switzerland, the film’s premiere at Zurich’s movie theatre Riff Raff is part of the “Brain Fair” forum organized by the Neuroscience Center Zurich: a panel discussion will be held jointly by director Peter Entell, Dr. Stephan Neuhauss (Brain Research Institute), and Professor Heinz Bonfadelli (Zurich University Media Sciences).
In April 2003, Peter Entell will accompany his film to New York City, where he will present “The Tube” as part of the Swiss American Film Festival at the Anthology Film Archives. This may serve as a possible starting point for the film’s distribution in the United States.
