“The Oil Crash”: Best documentary in Palm Beach

30.04.2007

The Swiss documentary “The Oil Crash” by Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack was awarded “Best Documentary” at the 12th Palm Beach International Film Festival (April 19 – 26, 2007).
The film researches the current state of the dwindling oil reserves and was one of the 30 films in the festival competition.
The jury of the category documentary – a festival director and a conferrer – chose “The Oil Crash” because „it forces us to reflect on our casual expectation that the oil will last forever. It is indeed time to wake up and deal with the imminent end of cheap oil. Filmmakers, Ray McCormack and Basil Gelpke, tell us with clarity and a refreshing lack of drama that we are glibly sucking dry a non-renewable resource. This is a must see and a fine example of documentary filmmaking.”

Since its premier in Toronto in April 2006, „The Oil Crash“ has been invited to approximately thirty film festivals, including Leeds, Los Angeles and Buenos Aires and has received five awards so far. The film is at the moment running in theatres of German-speaking Switzerland and will be shown in the French-speaking region starting May 9.
