The Canadian festival is screening 85 animation film productions in this year's competition, encompassing all animation techniques. Swiss director Nina Wehrle and Chilean director Cristobal Leon tell of a child that escapes in a box in "Der kleinere Raum".
"Schlaf" is a metaphor for death. Since September it has been screened in Swiss cinemas as a supporting film with Jean-Stéphane Bron's documentary film "Cleveland Versus Wall Street." Since its premiere in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in July, "Schlaf" has been invited to some dozen festivals and is now among the 55 works that the festival in Ottawa will present in its Showcase section. In November it will be screened at five further international festivals.
This year 2,100 films were submitted to the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Together with the Festivals in Annecy, Zagreb and Hiroshima, it ranks among the most important festivals worldwide for the animation film genre. The festival was founded by the Canadian Film Institute in 1976. Apart from the films screened in competition and in special sections, with "Il davos capetel" (2007) by Carla Hitz as well, the festival offers a wide range of activities, including workshops, Master classes, retrospectives and a television animation conference.
