The short film “Floh!” by Christine Wiederkehr won the 2005 First Steps Award in the category of “short films under 25 minutes” with a prize sum of 10,000 Euro. Along with “Frohe Ostern” (Happy Easter) by Ulrich Schaffner and “Hunde” (Dogs) by Matthias Huser, which were also nominated in this category, these films were produced in conjunction with the Zurich School of Art and Design. The award ceremony took place at the Theater am Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, on August 23 2005. “Floh!” had already received a graduation award from the Zurich School of Art and Design. Cinematographer was Filip Zumbrunn who received the 2005 Swiss Film Prize for Light and Camera in the movie “Straehl.”
“Floh!” (flea) is the story of the beautiful nine-year-old child-prodigy Floh. She was artificially conceived and is now running from the parents who contracted her birth.

“This movie is about the search for happiness, this time in the form of a Swiss screwball comedy. With its length of 18 minutes, “Floh!” appears light as a feather which is clearly the product of a lot of diligent work. The script by Dave Tucker is a fast-paced comedy about being a fugitive, a weird and playful story leaving the viewer with the desire for more. Lavinia Wilson and hard-to-recognize Sebastian Blomber, dance like fools through a gangster’s pistol towards an unconvential happy ending. Cinematographer Filip Zumbrunn tells the story in images that easily fill movie screens.

Fleas are easily overseen but they can jump far. The same is true for Christine Wiederkehr’s diploma film for the Zurich School of Art and Design. One ought to keep an eye on this particular “Floh”. We are looking forward to the next movie by Christine Wiederkehr.” (excerpt from the jury’s justification).

In 2004, Ralph Etter, with his movie “Loose Contact” was the winner of the desired First Steps Award.
