The short film “Wackelkontakt” (“Loose Connection”) by Ralph Etter won the First Steps Award 2004 in the category of “Short and Animated films under 25 minutes”, receiving a prize sum of 10,000 Euro. The award ceremony took place at the “Theater am Potsdamer Platz” in Berlin on August 24. Earlier in Locarno, Switzerland, “Wackelkontakt”, which is Ralph Etter’s final thesis project for the Zurich School of Art and Design (HGKZ), also received two awards.
“Wackelkontakt” is a co-production between the Zurich School of Art and Design (HGKZ), where director Ralph Etter is completing his training, and the Konrad Wolf Academy for Film and Television (HFF) Postdam-Babelsberg, where cameraperson Ulrike Thiele is enrolled in the training program.

The film tells the story of Sybille, who, through unusual means, deals with her grandmother’s senility. The jury justified its decision by stating that “the movie is like a painting. Having seen it, one finds it hard to believe that it consists of separate edits. It seems more like a single breath about Sybille, her little brother and her grandmother.”

Earlier in Locarno, “Wackelkontakt” was awarded the Silver Leopard (Kodak prize of film stock with a value of CHF 6,000 for a Swiss film), as well as the prize of the youth jury “Cinema e Gioventu.”
