Swiss presence at animation film festival in Ottawa

15.09.2008

Two Swiss short films will compete at the 32nd Ottawa International Animation Festival (September 17-21, 2008). The films are: “Retouches”, the most recent gouache animation film by Georges Schwizgebel, the virtuoso in animation filmmaking from Geneva; and the world premiere of “Optical Percussion” by Gerd Gockel, an experimental German-Swiss co-production film. Duscha Kistler, who is the artistic director of the Fantoche Animation Film Festival in Baden, is a member of the international jury. With support from SWISS FILMS, she has organised a retrospective which places Swiss animation films in the limelight in Ottawa.
The two short Swiss animation films are among the some 100 films which will be screened in the official competition. Georges Schwizgebel, whose previous film “Jeu” won an award in Ottawa in 2006, is on his way to becoming a regular guest at the Canadian festival. The retrospective, curated by Duscha Kistler, comprises ten films, two of which are “Banquise” (2005) by Cédric Louis and Claude Barras, and Claudius Gentinetta’s “Poldek”.

Over 2,150 films from 70 countries were submitted for the Ottawa International Animation Festival this year. The festival ranks among the world’s most important for the animation film genre, together with the festivals in Annecy, Zagreb and Hiroshima. The festival, founded in 1975 by the Canadian Film Institute, also offers a wide spectrum of activities, including the Animarket Trade Show, workshops, retrospectives and the 5th Television Animation Conference.
