Swiss films win in Duisburg, Denver and Seville

Dieter Fahrer’s documentary film “Thorberg,” which has been very successful in the cinema, won its first international award in Duisburg. The award-winning festival career for Ursula Meier’s “Sister” continues with three further awards in Denver (USA) and Seville (Spain).

The film “Thorberg” by Bernese filmmaker Dieter Fahrer was honoured with the 3sat Prize for Best German Documentary Film, endowed with EUR 6,000, at the 36th “Duisburger Filmwoche” (November 5-11, 2011). With tickets sales well over 16,000, the film “Thorberg” about the inmates at a prison of the same name in the canton of Bern has been very successful in cinemas in Switzerland.

Since celebrating its premiere and winning the Silver Bear at the Berlinale, the Swiss-French coproduction (Vega Film, Zurich) has been screened at 40 festivals and honoured with six awards. Last weekend “Sister” garnered two awards in Seville: the Eurimages Award for Best European Coproduction, endowed with EUR 15,000; and the Agnès Godard Award for Best Cinematography. The 9th Seville European Film Festival took place in the Andalusian provincial capital from November 2-10. In addition, Ursula Meier’s second cinema film won the prestigious Krzysztof Kieslowski Award for Best Feature Film presented by the international jury at the 35th Starz Denver Film Festival in the USA (November 1-11).
