The Swiss documentary film “Beyond This Place” by Kaleo La Belle was among the main award-winners of the 50th Krakow Film Festival (May 31 - June 6, 2010). The film by the American-born director and graduate of the Lucerne School of Art and Design was honoured with the Golden Horn for Best Documentary Film Over 60 Minutes. Rafael Sommerhalder, graduate of the ECAL in Lausanne, received an Honourable Mention from the Student Jury for his five-minute animation film “Flowerpots” at the 20th Animafest in Zagreb, which also ended on June 6.

In the film "Beyond This Place" the now 37-year-old film director reconnects with his father Cloud Rock La Belle, a former hippie whose life mainly consists of taking drugs and intense cycling, still today. He challenges his father to a bike trip through the state of Oregon, during which Kaleo questions his eccentric father and demands justification for his absence in his life. The film, produced by Docmine in Zurich, had already won the Prix SSA/Suissimage at the Festival Visions du Réel in Nyon in April this year.

The Krakow International Film Festival, founded in 1961, is the oldest film festival in Poland and ranks among the most tradition-steeped festivals in Europe. It presents some 250 short and documentary films from Poland and abroad, which are in the running for the Golden and Silver Horns and Dragons.
