Swiss appearance in Havana rounds off 2006 festival season

30.11.2006

At the 28th Festival del Nuovo Cine Latinoamericano, taking place from December 5-15 in Havana, Cuba, eleven new Swiss films will be shown. As was done during the past two years, the festival is organizing a six-film «Muestra de cine Suizo» event together with SWISS FILMS, DFA, and trigon-films. The documentary films «The Short Life of José Antonio Gutiérrez» by Heidi Specogna (Production: PS Film, Zurich), and «Aristide And The Endless Revolution» by Nicolas Rossier will be screened as part of the competition of foreign films on Latin America.
With the «Muestra de cine Suizo» event and the screening of additional Swiss co-productions, Switzerland has a strong appearance at this year’s last significant event of the 2006 festival season. Also presented will be Oscar hopeful «Vitus» by Fredi M. Murer (FMM & Hugo Film, Zurich), which is being distributed in the United States and Canada by «Sony Pictures Classics», as well as the films «The Giant Buddhas» by Christian Frei, «Maria Bethânia, música é perfume» by Georges Gachot, and the «Short Life of José Antonio Gutiérrez». These films have already had considerable festival success and are presented alongside «So Long, My Heart!» by Oliver Paulus and Stefan Hillebrand, which has only recently entered the festival circuit. «Qué viva Mauricio Demierre! (y también la revolución)» by Stéphane Goël belongs to Swiss films shown in Havana that address Latin American issues from a Swiss perspective, and that rounds off the «Muestra de cine Suizo». Oliver Paulus, Stéphane Goël, and Heidi Specogna, along with cinematographer Rainer Hoffmann, will be in attendance at the festival and present their films in person.

Shown in additional sections are films co-produced by Swiss production companies such as «La stella che non c’é/The Missing Star» by Gianni Amelio (Carac Film, Berne) and «Status Yo!» by Till Hastreiter (Robert Ralston, Gute Filme, Chur), as well as short films «Ibis» by Pavel Giroud, and «Carhabana» by Alessandra Mueller.

Havana is one of the most important film festivals in Latin America, drawing an audience of several hundreds of thousands of Cuban film lovers. It traditionally presents various films from the American continent along with special programs featuring films from different countries worldwide.
