Michaela Müller, the 38-year-old filmmaker from St. Gallen, was honoured with a Spirit Award at the 13th Brooklyn International Film Festival (June 4-13, 2010) for her animation film “Miramare”. The eight-minute film was produced upon completion of her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb as a coproduction with Croatia. It had already participated in the Cinéfondation Student Film Competition in Cannes in May, before being screened in competition at the world’s most important animation film festivals in Annecy and Zagreb.
"Miramare" takes a closer look at a vacation resort in the Mediterranean, where tourists relax and "illegal" immigrants struggle for a chance to have a better life. Each scene of the film, with absolutely no dialogue, was painted and filmed directly on glass by director Michaela Müller.
A total of four Swiss Film productions were screened at the 13th Brooklyn International Film Festival: participating together with "Miramare" were the feature film "Der Fürsorger" by Lutz Konermann, the short fiction film "Zahn um Zahn" by Ivana Lalovic and the short documentary film "El futuro es hoy" by Sandra Gomez.
