The 12th edition of BAFICI – Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente – to be held from 7 to 18 April 2010 will devote a retrospective to Peter Liechti with five films and will also be showing a further six Swiss documentary films in various festival programmes. The Liechti retrospective is a cooperation between the Argentinean film festival and the promotional agency SWISS FILMS.

Peter Liechti will present “The Sound of Insects - Record of a Mummy” (2009), “Hardcore Chambermusic” (2006), “Hans im Glück” (2003), “Signers Koffer” (1996) and “Kick That Habit” (1989) personally in Buenos Aires. Liechti’s latest film “The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy” has already won several awards including the “European Documentary Film Award 2009 - Prix ARTE” and the “Zurich Film Award 2009”.

The musician portraits “Charlie Haden” by Reto Caduff and “Rocksteady” by Stascha Bader can be seen in Buenos Aires as can the film by Carlos Lopez on the Geneva architect Georges Descombes entitled “Un architecte dans le paysage” and the award-winning film “Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten” by Vadim Jendreyko with Swetlana Geier, the greatest translator of Russian literature into German. “David Wants To Fly” by the German David Sieveking, co-produced by Dschoint Ventschr, about transcendental meditation rounds off the strong Swiss presence in the Argentinean capital.

The invitation of Swiss films to BAFICI is a tradition. Nevertheless, the festival will be focussing on a Swiss film maker for the first time.

The festival of independent film in Buenos Aires is the most important film event in the Argentine alongside the international film festival in Mar del Plata held every November. The festival welcomed 245,000 visitors in 2009. Over 400 films from 45 countries were shown over a twelve-day period.

Olivier Père, the new artistic Director of the Locarno Film Festival, is a member of the competition jury.
