« Ryna », le premier long-métrage de fiction de Ruxandra ZenideRuxandra Zenide’s feature film debut “Ryna”, a Swiss-Romanian co-production, was part of the competition at the Film du Monde international film festival in Montreal in August. It competed in Sarajevo and was awarded the grand prize (Vague d’Or) at the Festival International du cinéma au féminin in Bordeaux, France. It has received additional invitations to important festivals and will be part of the competition at the 54th Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg (November 17-26) and the 46th Thessaloniki Film Festival (November 18-27). The largest US film magazine “Variety” gave this director’s first time feature film a very positive review.
16-year-old Ryna is the daughter of a poor Romanian who runs a gas station in a small community on the Danube river. Ryna has been brought up as a boy because her father had longed for a son. Zenide’s film is about strong family ties, about a daughter’s search for her mother, and about a despotic father slowly losing his grip. Ryna shows a girl’s search for identity along with the impacts of poverty, abuse of power, and oppression.
