Rome Filmfest: Swiss film project awarded

24.10.2007

The feature film project “Buttano”, which was developed by Geneva director Laurent Nègre in collaboration with the Bord Cadre Films company, received an honorable mention at “New Cinema Network” event as part of the 2nd Rome Filmfest (October 18 – 24, 2007). The main award with a prize sum of 30,000 Euro went to Polish director Slawomir Fabicki.
Fourteen young European directors had been selected for the “New Cinema Network” event which provided them with an opportunity to screen their first-time feature films at the Festa internatizionale del cinema di Roma, and to present their developing projects at a co-production meeting. The event’s jury was comprised of three producers, among them Oscar winner Cedomir Kolar (“No Man’s Land”). The jury determined the winning project and bestowed two feature film projects with honorable mentions.

Laurent Nègre, whose first-time feature film “Fragile” has received considerable attention, presented his film project “Buttano” at the event, which is in preproduction for 2009 and will be co-produced with Spain. The film’s main protagonist is a Pakistani gas station attendant who, separated from his wife and child, lives in Barcelona and aims for a better life for his family. In between “Fragile” and “Buttano”, Laurent Nègre will shoot his second feature film “Opération Casablanca”, with a story placed in Geneva. For this film, the director received financial support from the Swiss Federal Office of Cultural Affairs and the Western Swiss Television station TSR.
