Roman Signer turns La Rochelle upside down
27.06.2005
The 33rd La Rochelle International Film Festival (July 1-11, 2005) is showing video works by St. Gall artist Roman Signer, internationally known for his experiments and “action sculptures”. Rather than projecting his eight short movies in a movie theatre or on video screen, they are shown on the ceiling of the Fromentin chapel, a 17th-century college church. As part of the “Carpets, Cushions, and Video” series, audience members rest on soft carpets and pillows and experience Signer’s work from an unusual, upside down perspective. Peter Liechti’s film “Signer’s Suitcase” plays in the parallel program “Here and Elsewhere.”
With the artist in attendance, the following video works by Roman Signer will be shown In the “Carpet, Cushions, and Video” program: “Action for Orangerie” (1987), “Works 1994 – 1996” “Hat” (1997), “Sand auf Radio” (1998), “Biennale di Venezia” (1999), “Two Tables with Barrels” (2000), “Kajak” (2000), “ Im Steirischen Wald” (2004). The film essay “Signer’s Suitcase” by Peter Liechti (1996), has been shown at numerous film festivals both in Switzerland and abroad. It won the Bronze Dove in Leipzig, the audience award at the Viennale, and film prizes from the cities of Berne and Zurich.
