«Maria Bethânia – Musica e perfume» awarded in Portugal and in the USA

At the Fama Festival International de Cinéma e de Vídeo (April 28 – May 6, 2006) in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal, Georges Gachot’s film portraying the singer Maria Bethânia was awarded the Special Prize of the Jury on May 6th. On April 30th, it was chosen as one of the five audience favorites at the 20. Washington DC International Film Festival (April 19-30, 2006).
Since its premiere at the «Visions du Réel» Festival in Nyon in 2005, «Maria Bethânia – Musica e perfume» has participated in over 20 international film festivals. It has had successful theatrical releases in Brazil, France, Austria, Spain, and Switzerland, and will be released in Belgium and Holland shortly. In addition, negotiations on the film’s distribution rights for Argentina and the United States are near completion. The film will also be shown at the House of Cultures in Berlin on June 19th on the occasion of the World Cup soccer tournament, as part of the «Copa da cultura» event organized by the Brazilian government.
