Grimme Prize : “War Photographer” receives award

As part of the 39th Adolf-Grimme Prize 2003, the special prize of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, Culture and Sport Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, will be awarded to the Swiss documentary filmmaker Christian Frei for his film “War Photographer”. Christian Frei will be given the prize at a reception in Marl, Germany, on March 21, 2003. This prestigious award in the competition section “Information & Culture” confers 10,000 Euros.
The Adolf-Grimme Prize is bestowed yearly for achievement in television which “uses the specific possibilities of the television medium in outstanding fashion and through its content and method displays exemplary television work”. The prize represents the German “Television Oscar” and is awarded by a jury consisting of critics, publishers, media and education experts. “War Photographer” was broadcast on the German-French cultural channel Arte on November 25, 2002, and was nominated among 15 other submissions for the category of documentaryfilm/TVjournalism/Feature/Essay.
This special prize represents the eighth international award received by “War Photographer” since its nomination for the US Academy Awards for Best Documentary Film in 2002.
Shortly before the award ceremony in Marl on March 21, Christian Frei and cameraman Peter Indergand will return to Afghanistan where they are preparing for the production of their extensive documentary film “The Giant Buddhas”.
