Golden Gate Award for documentary film “Nomad’s Land”
08.05.2009
The Swiss film “Nomad’s Land” by Gaël Métroz was honoured with the Golden Gates Award in the Documentary Feature category at the award ceremony of 52nd San Francisco International Film Festival on May 6, 2009. Endowed with $20,000, it ranks as the second highest monetary award at the festival. Gérard Monier, from the Tipi’mages production firm in Geneva, attended the festival in San Francisco to accept the award.
The film “Nomad’s Land” traces Nicolas Bouvier’s journey from Geneva to Sri Lanka. Since ist premiere at the International Film Festival Visions du Réel in Nyon in 2008, it has been screened at international festivals in Locarno, Hof, Leipzig, Gothenburg and Munich. It won the Audience Prize in Mexico and has also been well received in Swiss cinemas, being viewed by more than 32,000 until now. Thus, it comes as no surprise that it was also a big hit in San Francisco: in order to accommodate the tremendous demand, the festival had to organise additional screenings of the film.
Founded by the San Francisco Film Society in 1957, the film festival is the longest-running film festival in the Americas, attracting an annual audience of more than 80,000. More than 100 filmmakers had the opportunity to present their works personally to the festival’s loyal and passionate audience this year.
