Fredi M. Murer retrospective in Canada and theatrical release for “Vitus” in North America

A retrospective dedicated to well-known Swiss director Fredi M. Murer who won international acclaim with his film “Höhenfeuer/Alpine Fire”, features 12 of his films and will be opening in Montreal on May 29, 2007, and in Ottawa on June 1, 2007, with the director in attendance. In addition, his work show will reach the two Canadian cities Toronto and Vancouver in the fall of 2007, while in June, Murer’s most recent production “Vitus” will be released in movie theatres in North America.
The US distribution company Sony Pictures Classics will be launching “Vitus” throughout the United States beginning June 29, 2007. Fredi M. Murer advertised the film’s release during a promotional tour in New York in April, which counts as one of the most important movie markets worldwide and is the location where the extraordinarily successful international career of the film will culminate. The Canadian audience will be able to view the film over the coming months. Sony Pictures Classics, which purchased the distribution rights for the North American continent, has delegated the film’s distribution for the English-speaking parts of Canada to Mongrel Films and to Metropole Films for the French-speaking regions.

The retrospective in Montreal (May 30 – June 9, 2007) includes early short and documentary films “Marcel” (1962), “Sad-Is-Fiction” (1964), “Sylvain” (1964), “Chicorée” (1966), “Bernhard Luginbühl” (1966), “2069 – oder dort, wo sich Futurologen und Archäologen Gute Nacht sagen” (1969), “H.R. Giger – Passagen”(1972), “Wir Bergler in der Bergen sind eigentlich nicht schuld, dass wir da sind” (1974), as well as his long films “Grauzone/Zones” (1979), “Höhenfeuer/Alpine Fire” (1985), “Der grüne Berg” (1990), and “Vollmond/Full Moon” (1998). In Ottawa, only the last four of his films will be shown between June 1 and July 8, 2007. Additional screenings are in the planning for the fall at the Cinematheque Ontario in Toronto and at the Pacific Cinematheque in Vancouver.
