Films by Christian Frei as GEO edition
12.03.2007
GEO is dedicating its first DVD edition to Swiss filmmaker Christian Frei and thereby giving him their greatest acknowledgement. The “Christian Frei Collection” will be released on March 16, 2007, and it will include the documentary film “The Giant Buddhas” (2005), which, after a longstanding and continuous festival career, is currently shown at the Montreal International Festival of Film on Art (March 8 – 18, 2007), Oscar-nominated film “War Photographer” (2001), and the film “Ricardo, Miriam y Fidel” (1997), as well as a 62-page booklet.
GEO chief editor Peter-Matthias Gaede, who initiated the edition, justifies his enthusiasm for Christian Frei’s films: “One cannot easily let go of the themes Frei touches upon. His films leave a lasting imprint. Rarely have I been as excited about a cooperation as I am between Christian Frei and GEO. This is not just because of the films’ themes: their dimension reaches far beyond location and protagonists. But also because Christian Frei is one of the most convincing contemporary journalists. His works will be become classics of documentary film, or better, they already are.”
A 62-page booklet titled „Die Tektonik des Menschlichen“, made possible by SWISS FILMS, and comprised of articles by Peter-Matthias Gaede, Tilmann P. Gangloff, Norbert Creutz, and James Nachtwey, among others, will accompany the documentary film edition. Its English and French translation can be downloaded at (www.giant-buddhas.com).
Christian Frei is currently in the preproduction stage for his next film “Space Tourists”.
