European Film Prize 2009: Swiss film “Brothers” in the running for nomination
07.09.2009
The film “Brothers” by Igaal Niddam (produced by Troubadour Films, Geneva) is on the selection list for the European Film Prize 2009, announced by the European Film Academy (EFA) on 7 September. This year, a total of 48 European films are eligible for nomination in the various categories. The nominations, to be made by the roughly 2,000 members of the European Film Academy over the next two months, will be announced on 7 November during the film festival in Seville. The award ceremony will be held on 12 December in the Ruhr metropolis of Bochum.
In his almost two-hour film “Brothers”, Igaal Niddam deals with one of the most delicate questions of Israeli society in the form of a drama between brothers. One of the brothers, who has been living in a laicist kibbutz for 25 years, confronts the religious convictions of the other brother who has returned from the USA to defend the rights of the Torah students. The film has been proposed for nomination by the majority of the Swiss members of the Film Academy. In the twenty countries with the most members – one of which is Switzerland – films are proposed directly by the members.
Prizes are awarded in the following categories: “European Film”, “European Director”, “European Actress”, "European Actor”, “European Script”, “Carlo di Palma – European Camera Prize”, “European Film Music”, “European Discovery”, “European Film Academy Prix d’Excellence”, “European Film Academy Prize for a Life’s Work”, “European Contribution to World Cinema”, “European Film Academy Critique Prize – Prix FIPRESCI”, “European Film Academy Documentary Film – Prix ARTE”, “European Film Academy Short Film” and the public award for the best European film.
