At the 10th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival “Visions du réel” in Nyon, taking place from April 19 – 25, 2004, Switzerland is represented with 18 new productions. The opening night and first international competition event honors Swiss documentary filmmaking with the world premiere of “Namibia Crossings – Spirits and Limits,” a musical road movie by Peter Liechti. Also part of the international competition, which encompasses a total of 19 films, is the Swiss production “Que sera?” by Dieter Fahrer, who already received attention in Nyon in 2000 with his essay film “Jour de nuit” on the topic of light perception.
As part of “Regards neufs”, a competition section reserved for debut films, four Swiss movies will be screened: The two intimate family portraits “Kint” by Olga Baillif and “Pizzet” by Ivo Zen, “Dieu sait quoi” of choreographer Fabienne Abramovitch, and “Transformator” by Antoine Cattin and Pavel Kostomarov.

Further, the 2004 festival dedicates a special series “Helvetiques” to Swiss documentary filmmaking. This program presents nine films, five of which are shown for the first time: “Le Passeur“ by Raphaëlle Aellig, “Mais im Bundeshuus“ by Jean-Stéphane Bron, “Quelques notes sur l’art de la mémoire“ by Dominique Comtat, “Blandine et le siens“ by Emmanuelle de Riedmatten, “Eigentlich sind wir (auch) von hier“ by Margit Eschenbach, “Standby-me“ by Marie-Eve Hildbrand, “Des tas de choses“ by Germinal Roux, “Vollenweider“ by Theo Stich, and “Le mariage en Afrique“ by François Yang.

In the festival section “Tendances” , two films that approach the world of music are shown: “Accordion Tribe“ by Stefan Schwietert and “Les Dieux ne meurent jamais“ by Patricia Plattner. Finally, in the special program “Investigations”, “Wall Street – A Wondering Trip“ by Andreas Hoessli is screened. This film takes viewers on an excursion to the New York stock exchange.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the TSR television channel (representing the French speaking part of Switzerland), the festival includes 13 TV film productions in its program, representing the history of this medium, and is showing the short films “Les petites visions” by Yann Olivier Wicht and “Francis Bacon, peintre anglais” by Pierre Koralnik on the opening night.
