Beijing: director Edna Politi in the limelight
24.04.2009
The Geneva film director Edna Politi will be the focus of the May Festival, which runs in Beijing from April 27-May 5, 2009. She will present her documentary films “Kurtàg – Fragments” (2008), “Ombres” (1997), “Le Quatuor des Possibles”» (1992) and “Anou Banou or The Daughters of Utopia” (1983) and lead a one-week workshop with eight Chinese documentary filmmakers (May 1-5).
This year marks the fourth continuous year of the collaborative project carried out between SWISS FILMS and the Caochangdi Workstation founded by Wu Wenguang and Wen Hui. It was launched in autumn 2008 and featured Peter Liechti in conjunction with the Crossing Festival.
This interdisciplinary project was initiated by SWISS FILMS and is part of the “China 2008–2010” cultural programme, for which SWISS FILMS and Pro Helvetia have selected a number of projects aiming to foster collaboration and long-term exchanges between Switzerland and China.
The May Festival in May and the Crossing Festival in October have established themselves as important independent platforms for the disciplines of documentary film, experimental video, contemporary dance and theatre. They focus on two main components: “Performance Space” and a “Film Forum”. In this year’s edition of the May Festival works by independent Chinese documentary filmmakers and short films by students will be screened in the “Film Forum”. The “Villagers Documentary Project” project, which was launched in 2005, will also be carried out.
