25.06.2007
The 2007 Baden-Württemberg Documentary Prize, which was awarded for the third time on June 21, 2007, went to Swiss director Sabine Gisiger for her film “Gambit” (2005). The award, which comes with a prize sum of 20,000 Euro, is bestowed biannually by Südwestrundfunk (Southwest Broadcasting), Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg (Film Promotion, Baden-Württemberg, MFG), and the Stuttgart Documentary Film House, as part of the “Dokville” event in Ludwigsburg.
“Gambit” tells the background story of the Seveso environmental catastrophe, which caused the release of highly toxic Dioxin from a chemistry plant on July 10, 1976. Gisiger documents the history of the event based on witness testimonies by technical director Jörg Sambeth who was in charge at the time. The film is a German-Swiss co-production between Dschoint Ventschr Filmproduktion, Swiss Television, and Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR).
From the jury’s perspective, “Gambit” represents an investigative documentary with important social implications. According to the jury, the film presents itself with confidence, is emotionally touching, and intellectually stimulating.
