Annecy 2025

World premieres for Swiss productions at the Animation Film Festival

26.05.2025

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival (June 8-14, 2025) will showcase the world premiere of the feature-length animation film MARY ANNING, as well as five Swiss short films and a VR project. A total of nine productions will be screened, five of which have been selected for competition sections. Furthermore, SWISS FILMS will be present with a stand at the Mifa Film Market.

MARY ANNING, Marcel Barelli’s first feature-length animation film, will be screened in the “Annecy presents” section. The HEAD graduate has already enjoyed considerable success at international festivals with his humorous animated short films. He won the Swiss Film Award in 2022 for DANS LA NATURE. MARY ANNING tells the story of the formative years of the historically documented English fossil collector of the same name. The Geneva-based animation film studio Nadasdy Film coproduced the film with Belgium.

In addition, Nadasdy Film’s minority coproduction of OLIVIA AND THE INVISIBLE EARTHQUAKE by Irene IBORRA RIZO (Spain, France, Belgium, Chile, Switzerland) will be screened in the “L’Officielle” Competition for Feature Films.

Thaïs Odermatt’s BANDWURM ALEXIS & DIE OPERNDIVA (production: maximage) will celebrate its world premiere in the “L’Officielle” Short Films Competition. The offbeat, animated collage is about the tapeworm diet of the world-famous opera diva Maria Callas.

Two Swiss productions will compete in the Graduation Films section: QUI PART À LA CHASSE by Lea Favre (production ECAL, Hélium Films), which recently won an award at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film; as well as COTTAGE CHEESE, the graduation film by Liina Luomajoki, Lena Metzger, Janina Müller and Alice Kunz at HSLU – Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art.

Roman Kaelin’s 3D animation GOLDAU about the historic landslide of 1806 will be screened in the Perspectives Competition, and Patrick Muroni will present his immersive dance experience RAVE in the VR Works programme.

The stop-motion thriller DOUBLE OR NOTHING by Tokay will celebrate its French premiere in the Midnight Specials. The master’s degree film from HSLU – Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art was inspired by the glamorous story of a Japanese real estate mogul in booming 1980s Tokyo.

Competing in the TV Films section will be À LA RECHERCHE DU LÉGUME STAR (Épisode 2) by Louisette Ismaël Ratsivahiny, a minority Swiss coproduction with Madagascar by the Geneva-based production company Séléné Lotus.

SWISS FILMS at the film market

SWISS FILMS will be present with its own stand at Mifa, one of the world’s most important film markets for the animation industry, to advise international industry representatives on Swiss animation filmmaking.

Three Swiss projects will take part in the “Déjeuner de coproduction francophone”, organised by the Canadian SODEC (Société de développement des entreprises culturelles Québec) in collaboration with Wallonie Bruxelles Images, Film Fund Luxembourg and SWISS FILMS. Twenty producers will have the opportunity to network with potential coproduction partners for their new projects in development.

Representing Switzerland are Cyrille Drevon (Maskarade Productions) with SHIFUMI, Frances MsStea (Asako Film) with PAPIERSCHLOSS by Luise Hüsler as well as Clémence Pun (Hélium Films) with C’EST LA VIE by Claude Barras.

With its new Line-Up Animation 2025, SWISS FILMS provides information about current Swiss animation film productions. In addition to the films screened at the Annecy festival and previous festival favourites, a curated selection of new animated films is waiting to be discovered.
