A river is like a giant clock. As long as it doesn't dry up (wind down), the people living near by will obey the laws of the past, as well as those of the present and the future. The constant presence of flowing water seems to make it easier to understand the passing of time, including one's own. “Zeit im Fluss” follows the course of the river Elbe from its source in the mountains of the Czech Republic to its mouth in the North Sea. Whereas in the upper reaches of the river shopping still has to be carried by hand to the car, in the “Elbe Shoppers Paradise” – the “new West” – the organisation is more like a human organism. It all makes sense!
