Richard Wilhelm went to China as a Protestant missionary in 1899, but soon began his “mission” in the reverse direction. He never baptised anyone in China, but instead set about trying to understand Chinese thought. Notable among his many translations is the I Ching, the “Book of Changes” that garnered him worldwide fame and is still re-issued over and over again to this day. Told from the perspective of Wilhelm’s granddaughter, the film covers the various stations of Richard Wilhelm’s eventful life during the transition to modernism in the 20th century in China and Europe.
