The film opens on Juan and Maria, two 20-year-olds, kissing. Juan can't bring himself to reciprocate Maria's passion: he has enlisted and is getting ready to ship out in the afternoon. A few days after his arrival in the war zone, Juan and his patrol partner, Rico, stumble into a situation which rapidly unravels beyond their control. In the ensuing chain of events, all protagonists' lives take a turn for the worse.
