Twenty-eight-year-old Zhibek Batyrkanova, decided to fight for women’s rights in Kyrgyzstan, where every year thousands of women fall victim to Ala-Kashuu, a forced marriage involving abduction and rape. Together with a group of young women, she launched an ambitious project: the construction of the country’s first satellite. Their aim is to combine a feminist and educational campaign to break down stereotypes, change mentalities and offer new opportunities to young women of their generation. The satellite will be named Burulai, after a young woman who died as a victim of Ala-Kashuu.
