Banished from everyday life, death lingers as a threat that no one wants to deal with. And yet just to be aware of a few positive facts - that one does not have to die alone, that in most cases something can be done to ease the pain and that it is possible to remain alive and present right up to the end - could well reduce the level of fear and concern. Such at least is the belief of palliative medicine which in collaboration with traditional healthcare attempts to give the final stage of life a more human face and to help each patient to get the most out of every remaining day.
