In 1940, Switzerland carried out its last execution under civilian criminal law. Few voices called for clemency. He was, after all, a man guilty of three murders. The condemned pleaded for “mercy before justice”. Yet only one heart truly listened – the widow of his final victim. What profound human grace must she have found within herself to forgive the man who had shattered her family’s life?
