In the summer of 1942 when the French Vichy regime began to hand Jews over to Nazi Germany, Fred Wander decided to seek refuge in Switzerland. He was immediately expelled, handcuffed to a chain and turned over to the French police. Beforehand however the Swiss police took away his few possessions: clothes and photos contained in a small suitcase. Fred Wander was deported to Auschwitz, which he survived. The photos the Swiss police had impounded turned up many years later in the Geneva archives. The film shows how the past can suddenly resurface, and the difficulties of coming to terms with it.
