On 24 July 1938 four Swiss mountaineers made history: Anderl Heckmair, Wiggerl Vörg, Heinrich Harrer and Fritz Kasparek became the first people to successfully climb the north face of the Eiger. Since then, others have repeated their success, but many have come to a miserable end in their attempt. Fast forward to 2001 when professional climbers Stephan Siegrist and Michal Pitelka set themselves a real challenge: to conquer the north face using historic equipment, recreating the conditions of 1938. Cameraman Thomas Ulrich accompanies them on their perilous quest, from their earliest preparations until their successful ascent in 2002, tackled with old shoes, crampons, rope and hooks.
