The film is set in the San Basilio fortress. During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, hundreds of African slaves fled from Cartagena de Indias (on the Caribbean coast of Columbia) and the surrounding haciendas into the jungle beyond the marshland there. They built fortified villages (palenques) in order to protect themselves from the Spanish head-hunters and mastiffs. These communities lived in isolation from the Spanish and mestizos until well into the 20th century. Living in isolated villages fostered the formation of groups, subdivided according to age, sex and task. Every game, sowing of seed, harvest, dance and type of music had a «cuagro». In 2000 there were still four music «cuagros» (a group): the dance of death, the dance of the maidens, the «seed» dance and the black dance.
