Hans Ulrich Schwaar, the 93-year-old teacher, writer, art collector and expert on Sami culture, looks back on his eventful life while in the home for the elderly in Schangnau i.E. For 25 years after his retirement, he lives alternately between the Sami village of Näkkälä in Finland and Langnau in Emmental. As a burgher in both worlds, however, he feels more closely connected to the High North in old age. Although ailing and nearly blind, his overwhelming desire for freedom induces him to break out of the retirement home and move once again to his beloved Lapland, where he dies four months later.
